Age-related eye disease affect over 100 million people worldwide, a number which is expected to double by 2050! Of the diseases, Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the working age population. Early detection and treatment can prevent 98% of severe visual loss resulting from diabetes. DeepMind, an artificial intelligence company owned by Google, and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London hopes to make a difference by using AI to analyze more than one million anonymous eye scans, creating algorithms that can detect early warning signs that humans might miss. Using a simple digital scan of an eye, they are hoping that Deepmind can spot two eye conditions in particular: wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, the latter being the fastest growing cause of blindness around the world. Not long from now a photograph taken on a smart phone will be all that is needed to examine a person’s eyes and avoid vision loss.–which is great news to the 90% of the world who has no access to vision care. Chaos take notice!
